Your assistant, your composite design

Keep your chat in Codex or another MCP client. AddPly provides the part, editable plies and visible results. The connection lets your assistant work on the project you see.

Connect once, then open your part

  1. If AddPly is already connected in ChatGPT, Codex or Claude, keep using that connection.
  2. Open your part in AddPly using the same Addcomposites account. Your project becomes available automatically.
  3. Ask your assistant to inspect your open AddPly project. Keep the tab open to see its work.
Inspect my open AddPly part and help me design its laminate.

Reloading, reopening or switching projects does not disconnect the app from your chat. If several projects are open, ask for the one by name. Pause a project using Assistant access beside Save; revoke the app connection in your chat when needed.

First time adding AddPly to your chat?

In your chat client’s connectors or MCP settings, add this remote MCP server:

https://addply.addcomposites.com/mcp

Sign in with your Addcomposites account and choose Connect AddPly. This authorizes your account independently of open browser tabs. You can connect before opening a project.

No open projects found?

Open your saved project under the same Addcomposites account. If project access is paused, choose Assistant access beside Save and resume it. An empty project list does not mean your app connection has expired.

Start with your part

Upload a STEP file, or choose a shell in the Library. Tell the assistant what the part should do, how it attaches, what loading scenarios matter, and which materials or manufacturing processes you can use. Unknown answers can remain unresolved.

Use the bicycle saddle shell. Help me define the loads and mounts, then propose a carbon laminate I can inspect and change.

Already have a layup? Supply your exact stack, material and patch specifications. The assistant can author them through the same tools while preserving your locked requirements.

See and direct the work

  • “Show the layers exploded.”
  • “Reinforce the selected mounting region.”
  • “Explain which loads have actually been evaluated.”
  • “Undo that change, then save this project.”

Your brief and decisions stay with the editable project. Fast commands return the actual result from your browser; longer geometry work returns a pending receipt that your assistant checks until complete. Layer views are display controls; load suitability follows supported checks on the exact design. Save stores the committed project in this browser. Export downloads need confirmation that the file arrived.

From draping to structural analysis

  1. Choose Tools → Drape and FEA. Allow selected surface data to be processed on AddPly’s server for this project.
  2. Ask your assistant to inspect the current study contract, choose a smooth layup support, resolve the seed reference and run a drape-only study.
  3. Review coverage, fiber directions and shear. Unknown material shear limits remain unknown; incomplete directions block structural analysis.
  4. Supply cured 3D elastic constants and their sources, the accepted orthotropic approximation, and named load cases. Pick mounting faces/boundaries and load faces/regions; declare signed pressure in MPa or total global force in N with their load basis. Ask for a combined drape and FEA study.
  5. Inspect displacement and each ply’s stresses. Revise the laminate, rerun and compare saved studies. Save or export the project to retain the results.
Inspect my connected part and propose a draping setup. Show the solved shear and fiber directions. Once I have reviewed the material assumptions, mounts and loads, run the structural study and explain its limits.

Separate material strengths from stiffness

Enable Ply strength assessment and supply 1/2 tensile and compressive strengths plus in-plane shear strength in MPa, their separate source, data basis, applicable cure/environment and a stress load factor. Published M56 cards contain only documented typical values; transverse strengths remain unknown. Short-beam ILSS is not in-plane shear strength.

Maximum-stress assessment checks all integration points and load cases. Use caseResults to inspect each case and show_live_study with loadCaseId and field: failure to view a ply failure-index field. Missing allowables are gray and cannot produce a complete assessment. A failure index at or above one reaches a declared threshold; a lower index does not qualify the part.

Review, revise and repeat

Define your displacement and drape-shear targets with their basis under Review targets, or ask your assistant to put them in reviewCriteria. Unspecified targets stay unknown. A screening target is not a strength allowable.

Review my design loop. Keep the load, mounts, material data and targets fixed. If the displacement target is exceeded, propose one laminate revision and explain its reason. Preview and apply the change, rerun draping and structural analysis, then compare the results under the same conditions. Save the project with its studies and explain any unresolved requirements.

review_live_design_loop returns the current assessment and next action, a peak displacement location, a comparison with a previous revision, and a validated rerunRequest for the current design. The assistant previews and applies revisions through the existing live design tools, reinspects, then supplies that request to run_live_composite_study. Changed material cards or geometry may require new inputs. Never reduce loads, add artificial restraints, or relax targets to obtain a passing screen.

The results panel offers Revise laminate, Rerun current laminate for a stale study, and Save design and studies. Compare saved studies reports percentage changes only when the study inputs and sampled structural geometry match. All previous studies retain their original inputs and revision.

The assistant uses run_live_composite_study, inspect_live_studies and show_live_study. Studies use KinDrape, Gmsh and CalculiX on AddPly’s server. This first scope supports a single-valued XY/XZ/YZ support, up to 32 plies and 1,500 S6 elements, scalar seed orientations, up to three independent named load cases, face/region pressures and total global forces, and CAD face/boundary or region restraints. It excludes overhangs, explicit transition rules, wrinkles, contact, damage and strength or manufacturing qualification. Missing elastic/load inputs are refused; unknown strength values remain explicitly unresolved.

Check mesh sensitivity before revising

Run at least three FE mesh sizes while retaining the same design, loads, mounts, material data, drape setup and CAD sampling. Ask your assistant to call review_live_design_loop with meshRefinement: saved study IDs, response-change tolerance in percent, source and its basis. AddPly checks every case and reports incomplete strength data or insufficient refinement. Observed consistency does not establish analysis accuracy or engineering acceptance.

If a tool stops

Finish or revert manual drafts before agent edits. Reinspect after changing projects. If a request has an unknown outcome, ask the assistant to inspect its receipt and reconcile the workspace before repeating it. Pause project access from Assistant access when needed. The chat app login remains connected independently of this browser session.
